問曰：發心有三：一信成就發心、二解行發心、三證發心。今言初發心，三中何攝耶？答曰：三發心中是信成就發心攝，所以然者？信成就發心位在十解位，即是正定聚位也。解行發心位在十行、十回向，即是初僧祇將滿位也。證發心位在初地上，即是證真如位也。此義如《起信論》中廣說。

Question: There are three generations of the mind: first, generating the mind through completion of faith; second, generating the mind through understanding and practice; third, generating the mind through realization. Now speaking of the 'initial generation of the mind', which of the three subsumes it?

Answer: Among the three generations of the mind, it is subsumed under generating the mind through completion of faith. Why is that? The stage of generating the mind through completion of faith is in the stage of the ten understandings, which is the stage of the determinate group. The stage of generating the mind through understanding and practice is in the ten practices and ten dedications, which is the stage where the first asaṃkhyeya [kalpa] is about to be completed. The stage of generating the mind through realization is on the first stage and above, which is the stage of realizing tathatā. This meaning is extensively explained in the *Awakening of Faith*.
