新華嚴經論 1.24

1.24

答曰：此經義者付囑凡夫，令覺悟入此法門故令生佛家，使其轉教佛種不斷，即令凡夫得入真境。若囑累諸大菩薩，凡夫無緣，諸聖自明。無凡夫修學者，凡夫道中佛種即斷，此經散滅。以此義故，付囑凡夫令修，不付已前大菩薩舊見道者。

Answer: The meaning of this sūtra is to entrust it to ordinary beings so as to awaken them and cause them to enter this Dharma gate, thereby causing them to be born into the Buddha's family, and have them pass on the teaching so that the Buddha-seed is not severed, thereby enabling ordinary beings to enter the true realm. If it were entrusted to the great bodhisattvas, ordinary beings would have no affinity, while the sages are already clear on their own. If there were no ordinary beings studying and practicing, the Buddha-seed within the path of ordinary beings would be severed, and this sūtra would be scattered and lost. For this reason, it is entrusted to ordinary beings to practice, and not entrusted to the previous great bodhisattvas who had long seen the path.
