Seventh, regarding 'taking the convergence of the provisional into the ultimate as the main purport' in the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra: this sūtra leads those people of the Three Vehicles to return to the ultimate teaching of the One Vehicle. It leads the many streams to return to the great ocean, and gathers the Three Vehicles to return to the single source. Master [Fazang] and earlier worthies harmonized them by considering [the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka] to be the common teaching (gòngjiào), because the One Vehicle is the Dharma heard in common with the Three Vehicles; whereas the Avataṃsaka Sūtra is the distinct teaching (biéjiào), because the One Vehicle is not heard in common with the Three Vehicles. Examining this principle and harmonizing these two gates: the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra leads vessels of provisional capacity to return to the true, whereas the Avataṃsaka suddenly presents to those of great faculty and directly confers [it]. Although the designation 'One Vehicle' is identical and the Dharma affairs are broadly similar, when discussing their norms and standards, there are many differences. If one wished to enumerate them all, the matters are so vast that it would be difficult to be comprehensive; here I will briefly raise ten gates so that their essential outline may be known. The ten gates are: first, the difference in the lord of the teaching; second, the difference in the emission of light; third, the difference in the land; fourth, the difference in the requester of the Dharma; fifth, the difference in the adornment of the great assembly between true and transformed; sixth, the difference in the enumeration of the assembly in the introductory section; seventh, the difference in the dragon girl transforming her body to attain Buddhahood; eighth, the difference in the land inhabited by the dragon girl upon attaining Buddhahood; ninth, the difference in the resolve of the assembly of six thousand; tenth, the difference in bestowing distant predictions upon the śrāvakas.
