Seventh, the dedication of merit by equally following all sentient beings is governed by the Kumbhāṇḍa King, illustrating that a bodhisattva of this stage perfects great compassion, universally enters all destinies, and avails himself of loving-kindness to benefit living beings. These are ogres and spirits of sorcery that consume vital energy, also called "winter melon ghosts," whose name is stated according to the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra. A bodhisattva equally follows even such evil sentient beings, and hence it is called the dedication of merit by equally following all sentient beings. He universally enters them even down to the hells. This deity is the southern celestial king, who governs two classes of followers: first, the kumbhāṇḍas; second, the preta ghosts. These kumbhāṇḍas have scrota as large as winter melons; when walking, they carry them on their shoulders, and when sitting, they squat upon them. The "Chapter on the Dharmadhātu" says: "They constantly and diligently eliminate all destinies of hungry ghosts." The Kumbhāṇḍa King illustrates that emotional attachment and greedy seeking are just like [the state of] hungry ghosts. The bodhisattva of great compassion completely follows them in their actions in order to sever all greedy seeking.
