The first practice of joy takes dāna-pāramitā as its essence. It has forty-three lines of scripture, divided into five sections. First, from 'Sons of the Buddha, what is the practice of joy?' down to 'causing all sentient beings to be joyful and pleased' has nine and a half lines of scripture, explaining the practice of dāna-pāramitā, learning all the cultivations of the Buddhas. Second, from 'wherever in any land there is poverty and lack' down to 'not going against the wishes of any sentient beings' has ten and a half lines of scripture, explaining that the bodhisattva in this stage, seeing places of poverty and lack, vows to be born into wealthy and noble families there, completely giving away material wealth as well as his physical life to benefit them. Third, from 'further making this thought' down to 'samyaksaṃbodhi' has eight and a half lines of scripture, explaining that during kalpas of famine the bodhisattva manifests a vast body and sacrifices it to relieve starvation. Fourth, from 'the bodhisattva thus' down to 'does not see great fruit nor see small fruit' has six and a half lines of scripture, explaining the knowledge of reality without conceptual notions. The notion of a pudgala (pudgala-saṃjñā) here means 'one who repeatedly takes rebirth in destinies.' The notion of a māṇava (māṇava-saṃjñā) here means 'a youth,' also called 'a scholarly lad.' The meaning is that he does not discriminate between good and evil, old and young, but gives to all. Fifth, from 'then the bodhisattva contemplates the past, future, and present' down to 'the first practice of joy' has seven and a half lines of scripture, explaining that he contemplates the non-durable body of sentient beings and seeks the durable body to establish them in eternal peace.
