Fourth, awakening that, through its great compassion, can follow defilement and purity without being defiled or purified: this explains that by practicing the six pāramitās in the previous six grounds, one attains an awakening that transcends the world and an awakening that transcends both worldly and mundane existence. Arriving at this seventh ground, using the awakening that transcends both worldly and mundane existence to enter into the mundane world, one joins in all the pursuits of ordinary beings to accomplish the practice of great loving-kindness and compassion, causing the conduct of Samantabhadra to become perfected. Although mingling with worldly defilement, because wisdom by nature has no defilement and one dwells in the world without attachment, it is like a lotus flower dwelling in water, constantly growing in water without becoming wet. Furthermore, abiding in the world to benefit sentient beings by the power of original vows, because in the substance of wisdom there is no personal craving for worldly pleasure, one does not delight in affection, pride, arrogance, and worldly luxuries and glory. It also explains that because the substance of wisdom is without reliance and without inherent nature, it is able to follow great vows and dwell in the worldly stream, belonging neither to defilement nor purity, but remaining sovereign and free. This Dharma-gate of the seventh ground is beyond the reach of the Two Vehicles, nor can it be known by bodhisattvas who practice the six pāramitās while craving purity and dreading afflictions. As the text below says, it cannot be known by bodhisattvas endowed with the six superknowledges, because having realized the exhaustion of contaminations, they cannot accompany birth-and-death to fully embody Samantabhadra's conduct and fulfill great compassion; because toward birth-and-death they have yearning and aversion, and become fatigued, delighting in being born in pure lands.
