The explanations of the ten masters above are all based on what was collected by Master Zang of the present Tang dynasty. Their similarities and differences each constitute a school, and all of them were the outstanding talents of their age, their wisdom surpassing all sorts of people. All were Dharma generals who commanded the worthy and spiritual, bright lamps that unveiled the Buddha-sun. One cannot apply praise or blame to their names; one can only revere their lofty intentions. Consider how the two virtuous ones, Si and Zhi, had already ascended to the inner hall; Master Yun expounded the Dharma beneath the Flower Rain Pavilion, awakened to the Vulture Peak that very evening, his Dharma eye shining ever brighter; ascending to the fruit stage today, their Dao equals that of remote antiquity. Consider when the Buddha spoke the words concerning the internal, external, and intermediate, and thereupon entered samādhi. Afterward, five hundred arhats each understood these words; after the Buddha emerged from samādhi, they asked the World-Honoured One together, "Who accords with the Buddha's intention?" The Buddha said: "None accord with my intention." The men asked the Buddha: "Since none accord with the Buddha's intention, will there not be fault?" The Buddha said: "Although not my intention, each conforms to correct principle and can serve as sacred teaching; there is merit and no fault." How much more so the expositions of these virtuous masters, which each possess canonical authority.
