In the first gate, properly entering the Dharma gate of the present stage, from 'At that time' down to 'I only know this bodhisattva liberation gate of the conforming lamp,' the text in this section is divided in meaning into six gates: 1. Sudhana contemplates the practices in which bodhisattvas abide, which have thirteen kinds of profound depth; 2. gradually traveling to the land of Three Eyes; 3. searching for Bhikṣu Sudarśana; 4. seeing him walking back and forth in the forest, reverently attended by devas and nāgas; 5. Sudhana bowing reverently and presenting his request; 6. Bhikṣu Sudarśana transmitting to Sudhana the bodhisattva liberation gate of the conforming lamp that constantly pervades the ten directions while walking. The bhikṣu is named Sudarśana ('Good Sight'), clarifying that with these Dharma eye, wisdom eye, and prajñā eye he well sees all phenomena and well sees the capacities and natures of all sentient beings, teaching and converting them in accordance with the time so as to cause them to attain liberation; hence he is named Sudarśana. 'Bhikṣu' here means 'quelling disputes,' for he is able to transform sentient beings' disputes arising from afflictions and views; hence he is called a bhikṣu.
