The second, the beneficial practice, takes śīla-pāramitā as its essence. It has forty-two lines of scripture, divided into five sections. First, from 'Sons of the Buddha, what is the bodhisattva's beneficial practice?' down to 'attains the equal, correct Dharma praised by the Buddhas' has six lines of scripture, explaining non-attachment to the spheres of the five dusts (sense objects). Second, from 'when the bodhisattva maintains pure precepts in this way' down to 'the mind of all-knowledge (sarvajñatā)' has eight lines of scripture, explaining that Māra leading celestial maidens cannot confuse or agitate him. Third, from 'Sons of the Buddha' down to 'nirvāṇa without remainder' has eight lines of scripture, explaining that the bodhisattva does not afflict sentient beings with the five desires. Fourth, from 'why is this?' down to 'causing others to be happy' has thirteen lines of scripture, explaining that only by properly subduing oneself can one preach the Dharma and cause others to attain happiness. Fifth, from 'Sons of the Buddha' down to 'beneficial practice' has six lines of scripture, explaining the attainment of practice transcending the world and entrance into profound wisdom.
