Ninth, as for Dharma Master Yun of Guangzhai Monastery of the Liang dynasty establishing four teachings: it refers to how in the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra the three carts at the gate are the three vehicles, and the great white-ox cart conferred at the crossroads is the fourth vehicle, because the ox-cart at the gate was not obtained, just like the goat and deer carts. If this were not so, when the elder enticed his sons inside the house, saying that these three carts were outside the gate, the sons should have obtained the carts upon leaving the house. Why then, having exited, did they seek the carts originally indicated and fail to obtain them, so that they sought again afterward? Thus we know that it was provisional, the same as the goat and deer [carts], being an expedient expounding as the provisional Mahāyāna teaching. The full explanation is as in his commentary on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka.
