"At that time Śrīmālā ..." and below is the fifteenth, the Chapter on Śrīmālā's Lion's Roar. It is explained through two gates: first, the gate of the purpose of its occurrence. Why does this chapter come next? The preceding fourteen chapters explained expounding the Dharma; now it explains protecting the Dharma. Furthermore, at the end of the Chapter on the True Sons it says that there is great benefit in not slandering the profound Dharma; this chapter explains that those who slander incur great ruin and have no great benefit, so it now explains that rescuing and gathering in slanderers is a great benefit. Therefore the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: "Although one can expound the Dharma in such various ways, if one cannot make a lion's roar, one cannot subdue unrighteous, evil people." Only now is she able to do so, hence it is called a lion's roar. Furthermore, speaking generally, expounding the previous fourteen chapters broadly speaking explained one's own practice; when one's own practice is complete, one becomes capable of transforming and benefiting others, and therefore it is discussed next. Furthermore, since Śrīmālā saw that the Tathāgata corroborated what she had spoken and made evident the loss and benefit of those who believe, she immediately made a vow: "If there are those who do not believe, I will crush and subdue them to make them believe." Therefore it is discussed next.
