3.60

「爾時勝鬘」下，第四勝鬘致敬。所以須致敬者，一欲請佛述成，是故致敬；二上明用威伏物似非善，故須請述令化學之。又此經始末，勝鬘凡有三禮：初請佛應，佛遂應之，以見佛歡喜，是故致禮敬。次請佛攝受，欲明師資道成，是故致禮。今說經竟，致如來印可，故欲報佛恩，是故頂禮。

"At that time Śrīmālā ..." and below is the fourth part, where Śrīmālā pays homage. Why she must pay homage: first, she wishes to ask the Buddha to corroborate [her words], and therefore pays homage; second, above it explained using majesty to subdue beings, which seems unvirtuous, so she must request corroboration so that those to be transformed may learn it. Furthermore, from beginning to end in this sūtra, Śrīmālā pays homage three times in all: first, she requested the Buddha's response, and the Buddha duly responded, and seeing the Buddha's joy, she therefore paid homage. Next, she requested the Buddha to gather them in, wishing to show that the way of master and disciple was accomplished, and therefore paid homage. Now, having finished expounding the sūtra and having brought about the Tathāgata's endorsement, she wishes to repay the Buddha's kindness, and therefore touches her head to the ground in homage.
