Fifth is the section on associated (samprayukta) and unassociated (viprayukta). First, in terms of dharmas that form mental conditions and reflections, associated and unassociated are distinguished. Dharmas that do not form mental conditions and reflections are unassociated; that is, the seeds of the five entrenchments are such. Above, association with the mind was spoken of; hence this text says, 'What arises is associated with a momentary mind.' Beginningless ignorance is unassociated; defilements as numerous as the sands of the Ganges are associated. Second, division by coarse and subtle: the four entrenchments are associated because they are coarse; ignorance is unassociated because it is subtle. Therefore the Awakening of Faith says: 'Coarse delusions are named associated; subtle delusions are unassociated.'
