The sūtra says: "Scattering all dust and toil, destroying all moats of desire." The commentary states: This subsequent part is the elimination of the heterodox of the category of craving. 'Dust and toil' refers to the objects of the five desires; they befoul and confuse sentient beings, hence called 'dust and toil'. Explaining emptiness to make them advance, it is called 'scattering'. 'Moats of desire' refers to the mind of craving and desire. Relying on objects, craving arises; objects defile sentient beings, hence called 'dust and toil'. Greed is deep and difficult to cross, thus it can be called a 'moat'. Once one contemplates objects as empty, craving and desire cease, hence it is also called 'destroying'.
