The sūtra says: "Meritorious fortune is fulfilled..." up to "all are concealed and do not appear." The commentary states: This second is praising his personal virtue. Fortune (zuò, sound of zhī-hé) means aid and blessing. Gather (jí, sound of duò-liù) means assemble and withdraw; Lu Fayan's Qieyun says it means "to cease." "Meritorious fortune is fulfilled" means that the essence of virtue and resultant blessings are all brought to full completion. "Awe-inspiring radiance shines in the ten directions" refers to the vastness of the light. "Heavenly light does not appear" refers to the extraordinary supremacy of the light. Some editions read: "All the radiance of the sun and moon is concealed and does not appear"; the meaning does not conflict. The Buddha's light outshines them, and the sun and moon withdraw their light and cannot shine outward; hence it is said that "double brilliance is gathered."
