On the sūtra passage from "A pure breeze arises at times" to "spontaneously harmonize with each other": The Commentary states: This second part concerns music. "Pure breeze" refers to what another version describes as "not the wind of devas nor the wind of humans." The "five tones" refers to *gong*, *shang*, *jiao*, *zhi*, and *yu* mentioned in the *Book of Odes*, which correspond to the sounds of the Five Phases. When it says here "*gong* and *shang*," it briefly mentions the first two; *gong* is coarse and *shang* is fine. "Harmonize" means to respond. They do not conflict with the notes, hence it is said they "spontaneously harmonize." Dharma Master Fawei states: "The five sounds are: 1. clear and distinct, 2. easy to understand, 3. non-dispersed, 4. non-tiring, and 5. pleasing to the ear." Although this [view exists], it is absent [from scripture], and cannot stand as the teaching of the sages.
