On the sūtra passage from "Ānanda, if those [bodhisattvas]" to "by his majestic spiritual power": The Commentary states: This second part concerns obtaining the tolerances through the power of wisdom. There are two parts: here in the first, obtaining benefit through spiritual power. Some say: on the first, second, and third bhūmis, one attains awakening by following sound; sound is like an echo, hence it is called adaptation to sounds. On the fourth, fifth, and sixth bhūmis, one abandons verbal designations and proceeds toward reality, hence it is called conformity tolerance. From the seventh bhūmi onward, one abandons signs and realizes reality, hence it is called tolerance of the non-arising of dharmas. "Tolerance" means the mind of wisdom resting in dharmas. This is certainly not so. From the first bhūmi onward, all have already realized reality; there should not be following sounds to proceed to reality, so there is a different record. Some say: the first is in the ten faiths, because one understands through following sounds; the next is in the three ranks of worthies, because one subdues karma and afflictions; the last is realizing reality and transcending signs, hence called tolerance of the non-arising of dharmas. This is also incorrect. If those who have not entered the ten faiths were born in that land and could not obtain the Dharma tolerances, it would contradict the original vow. Now, [we explain]: following the sounds of the trees that exist due to the wind, they exist but are not real, hence one obtains the adaptation to sounds. "Conformity" means having no discordance, and "yielding" means not conflicting with emptiness. Awakening to the fact that objects have no intrinsic nature does not conflict with existence while conforming to emptiness, hence it is called conformity tolerance. Contemplating all dharmas as transcending the four propositions regarding arising is called tolerance of the non-arising of dharmas.
