On the passage where the sūtra states, "At that time there was a king..." up to "the thought of the correct, true path": The commentary states: This is, secondly, setting forth the superior practice. Master Huiyuan says: "The arising of practice has two parts: from the beginning to the end of the verses, it explains worldly practice, which is the practice prior to the bhūmis; from Bhikṣu Dharmākara uttering these verses onward, it explains transworldly practice, which is what is cultivated upon the bhūmis." This is probably not so. A bodhisattva on the bhūmis constantly cultivates the benefit of sentient beings and the purification of buddha-lands in thought after thought; he would not exclusively cultivate and receive pure land practices for five kalpas. Now, here there are also two parts: first, a brief explanation of the superior practice; second, a detailed explanation of the superior practice. The first also has three parts: this is the first, hearing the Dharma and generating the aspiration [for awakening]. Generating the thought of the unsurpassable path refers to the augmented generation of the aspiration. This does not contradict the Avalokiteśvara-vyākaraṇa-sūtra or the Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka-sūtra.
