On the passage where the sūtra states, "Even if there were buddhas..." up to "firm and upright, not retreating": The commentary states: This is, thirdly, praising the superiority of the vow. "Buddhas" refers to the Buddha jewel; "great sages" refers to the Saṅgha. Some say: Making offerings to these also includes the Saṅgha jewel. That is not so; although it says "these," it speaks of "buddhas," so one knows it refers to the aforementioned. Now, "buddhas" are those who are offered to, while "great sages" are those capable of making offerings. Even though immeasurable great sages make offerings to many buddhas, they are still limited; this does not compare to seeking buddhahood with a non-retrogressing mind, because that is boundless. Que means "to retreat."
