On the sūtra's words from "Now we and the assemblies" to "all to attain the Way": the commentary states: This is the fourth, receiving once again the Buddha's grace. "Modesty and toil" are the cause; "grace and virtue" are the fruit. For *ku* (苦, toil), another text reads *ke* (恪, reverent). In ancient script it was written 愙 (*ruo ge fan*); the *Zilin* says: "*Ke* (恪) means respectful." "Modesty" is an expression of putting oneself behind. "Toil" refers to ascetic practice. "Good fortune and radiance" is the excellence of one's own merit. "Penetrating emptiness boundlessly" is the excellence of one's own wisdom. "Opening the entry to nirvāṇa" means transforming beings so they obtain extinction. "Instructing and grasping the canons" means teaching them to practice the Way. "Canon" (*dian*) means constant, because it unfolds the constant Way. The *Guangya* says: "*Dian* means to preside over." "To grasp" (*lan*) means to hold in one's hand, or to take up. Grasping principle through the constant Way, it is thus called "grasping the canon." The intention here is that the Dharma of the Way guides and opens them up, hence it says "instructing." Summarizing and grasping the many principles by means of these scriptures and making them practice them is called "grasping the canon." This is transformation through wisdom. For beings who are obstinate and harsh, majesty and virtue subdue them, causing them to melt away, submit, and turn toward the holy transformation; hence it says "subduing and melting with majesty." Soft and wholesome beings are gathered in through the power of compassion, and thus evoke response throughout the ten directions. Wherever there are conditions, they are gathered in; hence it is boundless. This is transformation through merit.
