The sūtra says: 'The Buddha said: "The fourth evil is..."' up to 'constantly harboring arrogance.' The commentary states: This is the fourth [section], explaining lying. It has two parts: first, explaining what is to be abandoned. This has three parts: first, reciting and explaining [the text]. This has three parts: here first, explaining the evil. 'Associates' (傍) means husbands and wives. 'Yi' (易, read as shen-zhi) means to slight and insult. 'Jian' (蹇, read as ju-mian): the Zuozhuan states, '"Yan-jian" means arrogant'; the Guangya states, 'great haughtiness,' meaning the appearance of exalting oneself. The Shiming says: '"Yan" means reclining and lying down without attending to affairs.' 'Jian' means limping and crippled, in pain and unable to work.
