On the passage from the sūtra beginning "Enduring hardship on account of the body" to "how painful and lamentable": the commentary states: This is the latter part, wherein pains arise from evils. 'Sitting' (zuo) also means 'by reason of' or 'to receive'. Because suffering increases without ceasing, it says 'long, vast, and severe'. In the principle of karma and its fruition there is no other agent, so it says 'the heavenly way unfolds'. When evil is committed it must become apparent, so they 'themselves interrogate and expose'. Jiu (to examine/arrest) is also jiu (phonetically tang-you); the Jueyi says 'it is a three-strand rope'. That is not the meaning here; here it means to restrict and delimit. Jiu is the ancient graph. Because the person is caught in the legal net, it says 'the web and mesh of rules and laws'. None among the high and low fail to comply with the law, so 'superiors and inferiors correspond'. Transgressors go to it with no one accompanying them, so it says 'solitary' (qiong). Songsong means being hurried and distressed. Qiong is the same as the ancient graphs 儝 and 𭜿 (chen-ying phonetically), meaning alone and singular.
