On the passage from the sūtra beginning "I pity you all" to "make effort to cultivate propriety and deference": the commentary states: This is the second part, citing the benefit of the present teaching to encourage cultivation. There are two parts: this first part concerns obtaining benefits from cultivating goodness. An 'estate' (yi): according to the Zhouli, 'four wells make an estate, two li square. Nine husbands make a well, one li square.' The Shuowen says, 'eight families per well.' A 'settlement' (juluo): a small canton is called a ju; the Guangya says 'luo means dwelling'; it refers to where people gather to dwell. Li (li-zhi phonetically) means pestilence, contagious disease passing between people. The Shiming says, 'pestilential qi spreading and striking people.' Ge (ju-he phonetically) is a flat-headed halberd, ten feet six inches, or six feet six inches long.
