On the passage in the sūtra from "they destroy thoughts of jealousy" to "cultivate the six points of reverent harmony": The commentary states: This is the fifth [section], on the enhancement of the cultivation of practices. It has two parts: first, the cultivation of practices of one's own stage; second, the cultivation of advancing practices. The first also has two parts: first, the expedients for cultivating practice. Destroying thoughts of jealousy is the expedient for benefiting others, for if one harbors jealousy, one cannot benefit beings. Seeking the Dharma insatiably is the expedient for benefiting oneself, for one who is contented will certainly not make further progress in cultivation. Next is diligently cultivating the correct practices. That is, the constant correct practice, constantly wishing to explain extensively, and other practices that benefit others. Their minds are free from weariness in cultivation, and therefore they wish to explain extensively; this is the excellence of their mind of teaching. "Beating the Dharma drum" and so forth refer to the excellence of what is taught. "Shining the sun of wisdom" and so forth refer to the excellence of the benefit conferred, shining the sun of the three wisdoms to eradicate foolishness. Cultivating the six points of reverent harmony is the practice of benefiting oneself. In cultivating the three modes of karma, views, precepts, and benefits are all held in common; therefore they are affectionate and respectful to one another, with no discord in their feelings; hence they are called the six points of reverent harmony.
