觀無量壽佛經疏 1.36

1.36

下下者，此等眾生，作不善業，五逆十惡，具諸不善。此人以惡業故，定墮地獄，多劫無窮。命欲終時，遇善知識，教稱阿彌陀佛勸令往生。此人依教稱佛，乘念即生。此人若不遇善，必定下沈。由終遇善，七寶來迎。

Regarding the lowest-lowest rank: these sentient beings create unwholesome karma, the five heinous sins and the ten unwholesome deeds, possessing all manner of unwholesome things. Due to evil karma, this person is destined to fall into hell for countless kalpas without end. When their life is about to end, they meet a good spiritual friend who instructs them to call upon Amitābha Buddha and encourages them to seek rebirth. Following this instruction, this person calls upon the Buddha and, relying on that mindfulness, is immediately reborn. If this person had not met goodness, they would certainly have sunk downwards. Because in the end they met goodness, the seven jewels come to welcome them.
