Fifth, from 'At that time Ajātaśatru was terrified' down to 'Are you not on my side?' clearly explains that the king gave rise to fear. This explains that when Ajātaśatru saw the coarse and urgent remonstrance of the two ministers and witnessed them departing with hands on their swords, he feared the ministers were turning their backs on him and would go to the father-king to hatch other plans. This made his mind uneasy, and therefore it is called 'terrified'. Since they had abandoned him, he did not know whose side they were on. With his mind doubtful and undecided, he immediately asked with his mouth to ascertain it. Therefore he said: 'Jīva, are you not on my side?' 'Jīva' was the king's younger brother. The ancients said: 'When misfortune strikes a household, none but kin can rescue it.' Since you are my younger brother, how could you be the same as Candraprabha?
