Answer: 'There are three different meanings. First, it explains that since the lady herself was shut away, there was no one else to bring food to the king; furthermore, the king hearing that I am in distress will become increasingly sorrowful. Now having no food added to his sorrow, the king's physical life will certainly not last long. Second, it explains that since the lady was imprisoned, when would she ever see the face of the Tathāgata and the disciples again? Third, it explains that the lady was confined to the deep palace by command, guarded by the inner palace officials so tightly that not even water could leak through; morning and night she could only worry over the path to death. With these three meanings acutely pressing upon her body and mind, how could she not become haggard?'
