2.64

二、從遙向耆闍崛山下，至未舉頭頃已來，正明夫人因禁請佛，意有所陳。此明夫人既在囚禁，自身無由得到佛邊。唯有單心面向耆闍，遙禮世尊，願佛慈悲，表知弟子愁憂之意。言如來在昔之時已下，此有二義。一明父王未被禁時，或可王及我身親到佛邊，或可如來及諸弟子親受王請。然我及王身俱在囚禁，因緣斷絕，彼此情乖。二明父王在禁已來，數蒙世尊遣阿難來慰問我。云何慰問？以見父王囚禁，佛恐夫人憂惱，以是因緣故遣慰問也。言世尊威重無由得見者。此明夫人內自卑謙歸尊於佛弟子，穢質女身福因尠薄，佛德威高，無由輕觸，願遣目連等與我相見。

Second, from 'turning toward Gṛdhrakūṭa from afar' down to 'before she had raised her head' clearly explains that because of her confinement, the lady made a request to the Buddha, having something to state in her mind. This explains that since the lady was in prison, she had no way herself to go to the Buddha's side. With a single mind, she only turned her face toward Gṛdhrakūṭa and bowed from afar to the World-Honoured One, wishing that the Buddha in his compassion would show awareness of his disciple's sorrowful mind. The words from 'In former times, the Tathāgata' downward have two meanings. First, it explains that before the father-king was imprisoned, either the king and I would personally go to the Buddha's side, or the Tathāgata and the disciples would personally accept the king's invitation. But now that both I and the king are imprisoned, the causes and conditions are severed, and we are separated from one another. Second, it explains that since the father-king was imprisoned, I have repeatedly received the World-Honoured One sending Ānanda to console me. Why console? Seeing the father-king imprisoned, the Buddha feared the lady would be distressed, and for this reason he sent someone to console her. The words 'The World-Honoured One is of awe-inspiring dignity, and I have no way to see him' explain that the lady inwardly humbled herself and deferred honor to the Buddha's disciples; with an impure female body and meager causes of merit, while the Buddha's virtue is awe-inspiring and lofty, she could not lightly approach him, wishing [instead] that he send Maudgalyāyana and others to meet with her.
