Eighth, from "I only pray that the World-Honoured One..." down, it clearly shows that the consort requested the specific practice. This clarifies that once Vaidehī had chosen the place of rebirth, she turned back to cultivate the specific practice, urging herself on and focusing her mind, firmly hoping for the benefit of rebirth. The phrase "Teach me to ponder" refers to the preliminary expedients prior to concentration, thinking of and recollecting the two retributions—circumstantial and primary—of that land, and the four kinds of adornments. The phrase "Teach me samāpatti" clarifies that, relying on the preceding thoughts, contemplation gradually becomes subtle until both thoughts and perceptions are extinguished, and only the concentrated mind unites with the preceding object; this is called samāpatti. A brief assessment has already been made here; in the contemplation gates below, it will be analyzed more extensively. This should be known.
