Third, the passage from "there may be sentient beings" down to "suffer boundless pain" directly clarifies, within the fifth and sixth gates, the characteristics of discerning capacity and the severity of evil created; herein there are seven points. First, it clarifies the capacity for creating evil. Second, it generally adduces the terms of unvirtuousness. Third, it distinguishes the gravity of offenses. Fourth, it generally concludes that manifold evils are not the deeds of wise persons. Fifth, it clarifies that as many evils have been created, the guilt is likewise not light. Sixth, it clarifies that without karma one suffers no retribution, and without a cause one experiences no effect; since the causal karma is not pleasant, how could the fruition not be painful? Seventh, it clarifies that since the causes of committing evil are fully present, the kalpas of repaying the retribution are without end.
