"‘If there are sentient beings who wish to be born in that land, by arousing three kinds of mind, they will immediately attain rebirth. What are the three? The first is the most sincere mind; the second is the deep mind; and the third is the mind of dedication and making vows. Those endowed with the three minds will certainly be born in that land.’" Arousing the three minds means the bodhicitta, also called the mind of the unsurpassed path. First, the most sincere mind means that the seeking of the Buddha's bodhi is decisive and firm, unswerving until Buddhahood. Second, the deep mind means hearing, reflecting upon, and cultivating the Mahāyāna Dharma, unceasing until Buddhahood. The Commentary says: "The great sea of prajñāpāramitā can only be fathomed by the Buddha"; hence it is called "deep." Third, the mind of dedication and making vows means universally bestowing the cultivated merit upon sentient beings, inexhaustible until Buddhahood. If correlated with the three collections of precepts: the first is the precept of ethical restraint, abandoning every evil, hence it must be most sincere; the second is the precept of cultivating good dharmas, cultivating every good, hence it must gradually deepen; the third is the precept of benefiting sentient beings, delivering every sentient being, hence one must dedicate and bestow. If correlated with the three Buddhas: the first is the virtue of abandonment, the Dharmakāya Buddha; the second is the virtue of wisdom, the Sambhogakāya Buddha; and the third is the virtue of grace, the Nirmāṇakāya Buddha. As the fruit has three Buddhas, the cause must have three minds, not one of which can be lacking; the rest is explained in detail elsewhere. Second, cultivating the three practices has two [parts]: first, listing the characteristics of the practices; and second, showing the time limit. First, listing the characteristics of the practices.
