"‘There are further three kinds of sentient beings who will attain rebirth. What are the three? The first is having a compassionate mind and not killing, being endowed with all the precepts and conduct; the second is reading and reciting the Mahāyāna Vaipulya sūtras; and the third is cultivating the six recollections, dedicating [merit] and making vows, wishing to be born in that land.’" Having aroused the three minds above, one must cultivate the three practices. However, there are those who directly cultivate the three practices, which implicitly possess the three minds; hence it says "there are further three kinds of sentient beings," and so forth. First, not killing is the foremost of all precepts; hence it is specially stated. "Being endowed with all the precepts and conduct": within this highest grade, one must receive the Mahāyāna bodhisattva precepts. According to the Bodhisattva-bhūmi-śāstra (Shanjie jing), one first receives the five, ten, and full precepts, and later receives the bodhisattva precepts; hence it says "all the precepts." This corresponds to the most sincere mind above. Second, "reading and reciting the sūtras": not only reading and reciting, one must study and understand them so that wisdom arises. This corresponds to the deep mind. Third, "dedicating [merit] and making vows" corresponds to the above, as is evident. Adding the six recollections, which are the recollections of the Three Jewels, precepts, giving, and the devas, these are called the Mahāyāna six recollections. Second, showing the time limit.
