Regarding "Kālodayin": The *Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra* translated by Dharmarakṣa states that this name means "Black Radiance." The *Vinaya* states that he is named "Black Light." The *Ekottarika-āgama* states: Kālodayin's body was extremely black. As he walked at night begging for food, the sky was very dark when he arrived at another's home. There was lightning in the sky. The woman of that house was pregnant; in the flash of lightning, she saw him, thought he was a black demon, was terrified, and miscarried. She said to him: "What kind of demon are you?" He replied: "I am a disciple of Gautama, come now to beg for food." That woman immediately cried out with vile curses. The Tathāgata learned of this and ordered the monks: From this day forward, they must not eat past noon, nor may they beg for food in advance.
