Regarding "Piṇḍolabhāradvāja": The *Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra* states that Piṇḍolabhāradvāja was foremost in the capacity for the lion's roar. According to the *Sūtra on Inviting Piṇḍola*, "Piṇḍola" is a personal name whose meaning is not yet detailed, and "Bhāradvāja" is a clan name, rendered here as "Sharp Faculties." Whenever a new house, bathhouse, vegetarian feast, or new garments and fine clothing are first made, he is to be invited first. Anyone who wishes to invite him should, in a quiet place, burn incense, make obeisance facing Mount Māli in India, and with utmost sincerity proclaim: "Homage to the venerable Piṇḍolabhāradvāja! Having received the Buddha's injunction to serve as a field of merit for people of the end of the Dharma, may you deign to accept my invitation." The *Vinaya* states: He originally craved a sandalwood bowl and, for the householder Jyotiṣka, manifested supernatural powers to go and fetch it. The Buddha reproached him, forbidding him to remain in this realm, whereupon he went to Aparagodānīya to convert sentient beings. The *Samāvatī-sūtra* states: The Buddha, wishing to deliver the difficult-to-convert king who served naked non-Buddhists, ordered all his disciples to manifest supernatural transformations and arrive there simultaneously to accept his invitation. At that time, Piṇḍola was in the mountains mending his robes and forgot to depart. Suddenly remembering, he pricked the earth with his needle while the thread was still attached to the robe, immediately exercised his supernatural powers, and departed; the mountain, dragged along by the needle and thread, followed behind him. At that time, there was a pregnant woman in that country who, upon seeing a great mountain darkening the sky as it came, was terrified and miscarried. Knowing this from afar, the Buddha sent Maudgalyāyana to go and ask him: "What mountain is that behind you?" Piṇḍola looked back, saw it, grasped the mountain, and hurled it eight thousand li away. The Buddha said to him: "My teaching and converting of sentient beings is entirely aimed at nirvāṇa; now you have arrived late and moreover killed a person. Human life is precious, and this displeases me. From this day forward, you may no longer eat with me or attend the assembly. You are kept to serve as a field of merit for future generations; only when Maitreya Buddha appears will you attain nirvāṇa." Hearing this, Piṇḍola was saddened and reproached himself; having eaten, he entered the mountains. The *Mahāyānāvatāra-śāstra* states: Arhats without afflictions, like bodhisattvas of the eighth stage, cultivate the bases of supernatural power and can dwell in the world as they wish; thus Piṇḍola is a transformation body, not a real body.
