經曰：「并諸菩薩摩訶薩」者，初釋標類也。《智度論》云：按梵本應名菩提薩埵摩訶薩埵，今此釋云菩提謂無上智慧，亦名為覺亦名為道。薩埵言眾生、或言大心、或云勇猛心，摩訶言大，是人為無上智慧道故，發生大勇猛心故。菩下去提、薩下去埵，故言菩薩摩訶薩。《小品經》云：是人為覺一切法無障礙義名為菩薩，常為大眾作上首故名摩訶薩。《道行經》云：是人於一切法悉了悉知故名菩薩，天上天下最尊勝法名摩訶薩。《十地論》云：摩訶薩者有三種大：一願大，起願普及法界，不同二乘但求自度故；二行大，菩薩起行無有難行不行難捨不捨難作不作故；三利益大，菩薩願深行遠，凡所施作皆欲利益一切眾生故。

The sūtra says: "Together with all the bodhisattvamahāsattvas": first is explained the designation of the category. The *Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra* states: According to the Sanskrit text, it should be called *bodhisattva-mahāsattva*. Now this is explained: *bodhi* refers to unexcelled wisdom, also called awakening or called the path. *Sattva* means sentient being, or great mind, or courageous mind. *Mahā* means great. Because this person, for the sake of the unexcelled path of wisdom, generates a great, courageous mind, dropping *dhi* from *bodhi* and *ttva* from *sattva*, it is called *bodhisattva-mahāsattva*. The *Aṣṭasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā* states: This person is called a bodhisattva because of awakening to the meaning of unobstructedness in all dharmas; because of constantly serving as leader for the great assembly, they are called a mahāsattva. The *Daoxing jing* states: This person is called a bodhisattva because of thoroughly comprehending and knowing all dharmas; the most supreme and triumphant Dharma in heaven and on earth is called mahāsattva. The *Daśabhūmika-śāstra* states: A mahāsattva has three kinds of greatness: first, greatness of vows, giving rise to vows that pervade the dharma realm, unlike the two vehicles who seek only self-deliverance; second, greatness of practice, because when the bodhisattva undertakes practices, there is no difficult practice they do not undertake, nothing difficult to relinquish they do not relinquish, and nothing difficult to do they do not do; third, greatness of benefit, because the bodhisattva's vows are deep and practices far-reaching, and everything they do is intended to benefit all sentient beings.
