The sūtra says: "Mañjuśrī, Prince of the Dharma": next, second, is the listing of the names. According to the Sanskrit text, it is Mañjuśrī, here translated as "Wondrous Virtue." In the newly translated *Sūtra Praising the Pure Land*, he is named "Wondrous Auspiciousness"; in Dharmarakṣa's *Saddharmapuṇḍarīka*, he is named "Universal Leader"; some sūtras name him "Gentle Leader." The *Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka-sūtra* states: In the past there was a Buddha named Ratnagarbha Tathāgata; at that time, the third son of a wheel-turning king was bright and wise, generated a deep and great vow, and cultivated the bodhisattva practices. That Buddha said to him: "I now name you Mañjuśrī." Here we rely on the old title as the name.
