The sūtra says: 'Seven tiers of trees, all made of the four jewels.' Next is the explanation of the third [point], trees equally adorned; that is, all are adorned with the seven jewels. The Infinite Life Sūtra says: 'All are intertwined with the seven jewels.' The Qingjing jue jing says that they are adorned with four jewels, a hundred jewels, or one jewel, appearing immediately according to thought. The Contemplation Sūtra says: 'Each tree is eight thousand yojanas tall, and its leaves, flowers, and fruits all display the colors of different jewels.' The Infinite Life Sūtra, speaking provisionally, does not specify size, except that the Buddha's Bodhi tree is four million li tall, its trunk measuring fifty yojanas in circumference, its branches and leaves spreading across twenty myriad li, spontaneously formed of all kinds of jewels; when devas and humans of that land hear this tree moving and proclaiming the Dharma sound, all attain the profound anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti and abide in the state of avaivartika, and seeing, smelling, or touching it, all obtain comfort and delight. This is the physical pure land. As for the ultimate land, the Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: 'The groves and trees of āsrava-free dharmas unfold the wondrous flowers of the factors of enlightenment and bear the fruits of liberation and wisdom.'
