經曰：「彼有無量無邊聲聞弟子，皆阿羅漢非是算數之所能知，諸菩薩眾亦復如是」，次釋第一常隨眾也。聲聞者，《成實論》曰：聞法得悟故云聲聞。故《佛地論》云：聞佛言音而入聖道故名聲聞。即《觀經》稱小乘根者生彼得四果也。

The sūtra says: "He has immeasurable and boundless śrāvaka disciples, all arhats, whose number cannot be known by calculation; the assembly of bodhisattvas is also like this." Next, this explains the first part, the assembly of constant attendants. Regarding śrāvakas, the *Tattvasiddhi-śāstra* says: Because they attain awakening by hearing the Dharma, they are called śrāvakas. Therefore, the *Buddhabhūmi-śāstra* says: Because they enter the noble path upon hearing the Buddha's voice, they are named śrāvakas. This refers to what the *Contemplation Sūtra* calls those of the small-vehicle capacity who are born there and attain the four fruits.
