"Rāhula": This is translated as "Obstruction-Veil", and also as "Born in the Palace". The Sūtra on the Original Deeds of the Five Hundred Disciples says: In the past I was a king; a ṛṣi committed an offense, and I confined him in the rear garden, forgetting him for six days without giving him food. Although I had no malice, through the condition of this forgetfulness I fell into the Black-Rope Hell for sixty thousand years, and in my final rebirth I remained in the womb for six years before being born; hence he is called "Obstruction-Veil", meaning he was obstructed and veiled for a long time by the fetal membrane. Six years after the Buddha went forth, Rāhula was born, so all the Śākyas suspected he was not of the Śākya clan. After the Buddha attained the path, he returned to the palace to preach the Dharma. His wife Yaśodharā (translated here as "Fame"), wishing to clear herself and show her purity, gave a joy-cake to Rāhula and told him to present it to his father. Knowing her intention, the Buddha transformed all the disciples so that their bodies were identical to the Buddha's; Rāhula presented the offering without mistake. Once the Buddha accepted it, the transformed buddhas all vanished, and only then did the Śākyas believe that he was truly born in the palace. The Mahāyānāvatāra says: Rāhula's long dwelling in the world is a transformation body.
