"Gavāmpati": According to the Fo huayan ru rulai zhide busiyi jing, this is translated as "Bull King"; the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa translates it as "Cattle Rumination". Various sūtras say: In the past he was a monk who plucked an ear of grain belonging to another to see whether it was ripe or raw; for five hundred lifetimes he served as a cow for that other person to repay the labor. Even now when he has attained the path, his feet still resemble a cow's, and after eating he ruminates; hence he was called the Cattle-Ruminating Bhikṣu. The Fenbie gongde lun says: For fear that people might commit misdeeds by slandering him, the Buddha had him dwell in Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, sitting beneath the śirīṣa tree, foremost in understanding the Vinaya. After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, when the Dharma treasury was being compiled, Mahākāśyapa sent a messenger to summon him: "There is now a great Dharma event in Jambudvīpa." Gavāmpati asked: "Has the Buddha attained parinirvāṇa?" The messenger replied: "The Buddha has already attained parinirvāṇa." "Is my upādhyāya Śāriputra still present or not?" The messenger replied: "He has already attained nirvāṇa beforehand." He then lamented: "My Great Master has already passed into extinction, and my upādhyāya has also attained nirvāṇa; the eye of the world is extinguished, and I cannot descend again." He then transformed fire to burn his body, and four streams of flowing water poured into the assembly of the compilation in Jambudvīpa. The water uttered a verse, saying: "Gavāmpati bows his head in homage / To the foremost venerable Saṅgha of the marvelous assembly. / Hearing that the Buddha has passed into extinction, I follow after him, / As a calf follows when the great elephant departs." Thereupon he attained nirvāṇa in heaven. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says likewise.
