In the first, those hearing together were extremely numerous; briefly raising four names, it says "all". "Bodhisattva" is an abbreviation of the Sanskrit term. The Tiantai Precept Commentary says: "Mahā-bodhi-citta-sattva: this is translated as a great mind for the Way that brings sentient beings to completion." Or it is said: "Bodhisattva translates as awakened sentient being; awakening refers to seeking above, which is wisdom; sentient beings refers to transforming below, which is compassion." In the listing of names, Mañjuśrī is also called Mañjuśrī; this is translated as "Wondrous Auspiciousness": "wondrous" manifests what he has attained, and "auspiciousness" praises his benefiting beings; it is also called "Wondrous Virtue", the meaning also being the same. Continuing and prospering the Buddha-lineage, he is called Prince of the Dharma. The Treatise [on the Great Perfection of Wisdom] says: "The Buddha is the Dharma King; bodhisattvas entering the stage of the true Dharma, up to the ten stages, are all named Princes of the Dharma." Thus we know that this name covers all the ranks below. Ajita: this is said here to be "Invincible", meaning that his compassion and wisdom cannot be matched by the partial and inferior. Gandhahastin is translated here as "Never Resting"; sentient beings being endless, his cultivation of causes and elicitation of fruits are without end. Constant Vigour: sentient beings being measureless, his seeking above and transforming below are without temporary laxity. In the concluding summary: however, the name bodhisattva applies generally from initial to final; those listed above are all in profound ranks of succession, or are provisional manifestations acting as supportive attendants, hence it says "all great ones".
