If these limbs of the path are cultivated based on the four truths of arising and ceasing, they are the limbs of the path of the Tripiṭaka teaching; if cultivated based on the four truths of non-arising, they are the limbs of the path of the shared teaching; if cultivated based on the four truths of the immeasurable, they are the limbs of the path of the distinctive teaching; if cultivated based on the four truths of non-action, they are the limbs of the path of the perfect teaching. The limbs of the path of the Tripiṭaka teaching are called the dharma gate of half-letters; since the turbidities of the Pure Land are light, it seems they need not be used, but for those whose small-vehicle seeds have ripened first, they may perhaps be temporarily used. The limbs of the path of the shared teaching are called the initial gate to the Mahāyāna, which the three vehicles collectively receive; in the Pure Land of common dwelling they should mostly be expounded. The limbs of the path of the distinctive teaching are called the dharma solely for bodhisattvas; in the two Pure Lands of common dwelling and expedient means, they are also mostly expounded. The limbs of the path of the perfect teaching are called the unsurpassed Buddha-dharma; those with sharp faculties should hear them in all four Pure Lands.
