Sengliang comments: The two teachings contradict each other and cannot both be true; one must be true and one false. 'Also have offenses': although they uphold the precepts themselves, they do not punish those who break precepts; when the Dharma is perishing they do not rescue it, so they are not my disciples either. If not punishing is still an offense, how much more so paying homage? Sengzong says: 'Also have offenses' means: as regulated today, the past Hīnayāna precept-holding also had offenses. Mingjun comments: From 'Furthermore, just as the Buddha said' downward, it raises the present teaching to conclude the objection. From 'As the Buddha said' downward, it cites the past teaching to establish the objection.
