Daosheng notes: Because of perverse arising, there is birth. If birth were permanent, it could not produce the defiled. If the defiled has no birth, whence does it arise? Sengliang notes: The first proposition takes what originally did not exist and now exists as birth. If the defiled has no birth, it is not defiled. The perverse arising of the defiled is called birth; the undefiled does not arise perversely, so it is not birth. The nature of impermanence is extinguished as soon as it is born; birth that is immediately extinguished cannot produce things, so the defiled has no birth; having no birth, it is permanent, and also not defiled. Baoliang notes: If dharmas are not produced by the mark of birth, then defiled dharmas have no mark of birth; if they have no mark of birth, they are not defiled.
