Sengliang says: The transformation of a dharma is termed difference. Because the dharma is impermanent, difference must likewise be so. Sengzong says: By analogy with the previous line, it should also say 'difference is permanent; because decay is impermanent, difference is also impermanent.' The phrasing here is mutually complementary. Now, mentioning 'the dharma' indicates that both that which is born and that which can give birth are equally conditioned. Furthermore, earlier it was said: 'If birth is impermanent, then defilement is permanent.' Since the phrasing was interrelated, this line clarifies that the dharma is likewise impermanent.
