Sengliang comments: The second challenge is that the icchantika should not attain buddhahood. Why? The four kinds of persons are wrongly determined. If the wrongly determined are indeterminate, the rightly determined should also be indeterminate. If indeterminate, nirvāṇa is then not eternal. If there are permanence and bliss, then the icchantika should not attain buddhahood. Baoliang says: Below this, he poses the challenge of indeterminacy. Moreover, he first enumerates instances of indeterminacy and then concludes the challenge. If the icchantika is indeterminate and later reverts to attaining buddhahood, all phenomena are likewise. Since nirvāṇa is counted among all phenomena, it should also be indeterminate and could revert to being saṃsāra. Fayao says: If it is further indeterminate, one should know that there is no permanence and bliss.
