Sengliang comments: 'Slayer of thieves' means slaying the thieves of afflictions. Because pure precepts can generate pure wisdom, they are called precepts received by the noble ones. Once one commits a grave offense, one shatters the noble precepts and is no longer called a bhikṣu. 'Losing the bhikṣu [precepts]': hearing that one loses the precepts received by the noble ones, they thought that everything is lost; this misses the point. Sengzong says: This is the seventeenth dispute. In terms of the correct doctrine, when violating the four grave precepts, that which is shattered does not arise, while that which is not shattered all remains. Daohui says: One loses according to what is violated. Baoliang's notes state: It is only that one cannot generate the undefiled (anāsrava); it is not that one completely loses the precepts, for the broken precepts still remain. Yet saying that violating a grave offense loses everything and is not the bhikṣu precepts misses the point.
