Sengliang states: The meaning of 'receiving a body' lies in initial birth; it is identical to what was formerly called 'attaining nirvāṇa upon birth' (upapadya-parinirvāṇa). Here, saying 'exhausting the lifespan' and 'birth' have different meanings; after this person receives a body, they then sever [fetters], which distinguishes them from [attaining] nirvāṇa in the intermediate state. Sengzong states: 'Two kinds' means that receiving a body is endowed with two kinds of karma. Zhixiu states: Because the words 'exhausting the lifespan' are ambiguous, the question is raised. Baoliang states: 'Attaining nirvāṇa upon receiving a body' explains the second person next. This person receives primary birth in the first dhyāna, severs all fetters of the three realms, and immediately becomes an arhat; hence it is called 'attaining nirvāṇa upon receiving a body'.
