Sengliang notes: The saṃskṛta is frail and deficient, hence called 'destitute'; the distinctions among the six destinies are called 'paths'. The eightfold path gets its name from what it cuts off. Baoliang says: What is here called the destitute path refers solely to saṃsāra. The destitute path is unable to bring to rest all defilements and retributions. Endowed with the eight noble paths, one's virtuous practice is full and karmic encumbrances are exhausted; this is called the fruit of a śramaṇa.
