Sengliang states: "Since it is said that the principle allows no partial awakening, and now he has simultaneously understood both permanence and impermanence, he should have become a bodhisattva; why does it still say he attained the way of an arhat? In assemblies there are never lacking those of the Small Vehicle, of small virtue and small wisdom; the sacred teachings have the necessity of guiding the lower and foolish from beginning to end, hence provisionally displaying the small path to cause people's minds to gradually open. Thus the ten masters all attained an immediate awakening."
